Built-In
Shelving
This will show you how to construct
built-in shelving.
Materials:
Hammer and finishing nails
Circular saw
Drill
Lumber
Shelf pins
3" wallboard screws
Tape measure
1. First, measure the area where you plan to
install the shelving. Subtract 1" from the
height and cut the two side panels.
2. Cut the shelves and the top and bottom panels
1-1/2" shorter than the planned width. Then
cut 4x2 frame supports (figure A) the same length.
3. Drill a row of holes 2" in from the inside
edge of each pre-painted side panel. The holes
should be spaced 2" apart and drilled 3/8ths
of an inch deep using a 1/4" drill bit.
Tip: To maintain a consistent depth, use a piece
of scrap wood that allows the bit to protrude
3/8ths of an inch (figure B).
4. Drive the finishing nails through the pre-painted
side panels and into the end grain of the support
frames.
5. Position the unit flush with the wall and
drive 3" wallboard screws through the top
support frame into the wall studs.
6. With the unit secured, attach the bottom and
top panels to the support frames with finishing
nails (figure C).
7. Trim out the top and bottom of the unit with
molding. Install the shelf pins in the desired
holes (figure D) and place the shelves on the
pins.
